Southern Sudan independence is irreversible
General John Ukec Lueth
Al-Jazeerah, 10/2/03
Editorial Note:

General John Ukec Lueth describes himself as a southern Sudanese. He advocated independence of Southern Sudan after the six-year transitional period. Apparently, he disapproves of the peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the SPLA. Al-Jazeerah does not share his opinion towards the future of the Sudan.
The war between North and South Sudan will end with independence of the African People of the South. The Arabs and their Arabized Africans in Northern Sudan can not buy unity by indulging in a belated intensive development projects to prevent South from seceding. How much money would Kuwait accept in order to be a province of Iraq? Both peoples are Arabs in contrast to South Sudan and North which have nothing in common except British colonialism.

Our war of independence started August 16th 1955. Northerners and their Arab supporters should be wise enough to accept the fact that Southern Sudanese will fight to the last soul; Even Dr. John Garang does not rule out independence of Southern Sudan. The wishes of the majority of the Southerners can not be circumvented.

Hopes for reconciliation did not work in Ethiopia and Eritrea even though they are all Africans. It did not happen in Yugoslavia. Garang and Beshir should have followed Czechoslovakia route. End the war by simply splitting into two countries. By then The Arab and the Arabized will fully participate in Arab league without dragging us Africans with them and vice versa for Southerners. Our destiny can not be bought by development in six years to avert our independence.

The six years interim period is a deliberate delay. It is unfortunate that the Spla is accepting a pause in the war of liberation for six years after which the North will renege again just like they did with Addis-Ababa Accord. The same tactics lured Dr. Riak Machar in 1997.If Beshir Kept his words the referendum would have been done in 2001.Gentleman agreement when it happened Between Eritrea and Ethiopia the world know that they kept their words and implemented them.

Many people may say that United States , United Kingdom, Norway, Italy and the IGAD and U.N will force Northern Sudanese to comply; but we do not know world Politics six years from now. You may say that I am too pessimistic about this particular peace agreement; that may be true because the Northern Sudanese Leadership diagnosed the Southern Sudan Problem wrongly. Therefore they prescribed military force. It has not worked for fifty years and it will never work. I was one of the Anya-nya officers during the first phase of war. I was absorbed into Sudanese army in June 1972. I have a lot of experience in field of North/South relations over those years. It is evident that we are better off alone.

The cost of war is getting more expensive; in terms of lives of Northern youth who are drafted and killed in the battlefield and Northern development foregone due war. When will Northerners realize that letting the South go is beneficial for their people and their progress?

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND SEASONAL GREETINGS

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Brothers and Sisters of our great country “The Republic of the Sudan.â€‌ I am honored to be your Ambassador and to be posted to the United States of America. It is my wish that we all cherish the peace and tranquility brought about by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) as well as the Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement (ESPA).

Fellow citizens, I call upon you to forgive the dark past and embrace peace for the sake of children and our great nation. For fifty years of independence, we have been at war with each other at our expense and that of our children. Now is the time to build and care about each other. We have to accelerate the pace of development to compensate for the valuable time we have squandered through vicious wars and persecution of the innocent.

Brothers and Sisters, we Sudanese are unique in our social way of friendliness and love of one another, but that has not prevented governments from dividing us by regions, race and religion. These three Rs have been the killers of our greatness and riches. Time has come for us to realize the virtues of diversity. Don’t we see how beautiful a butterfly is? What if it had only one color? Our world is rich with diversity and diversity is the norm in nature. Diversity is strength when embraced and channeled love and care for one another.

My dear countrymen and women, I am appealing to you to come together and profess peace by undertaking genuine practices that strengthen our unity. Take time to celebrate each other holidays and ceremonies. This is the season for us to join Christians, Muslims and other religions that are practiced by our fellow citizens and our host country people of the United States of America. We are blessed by the kindness and good neighborliness that we do more so than by the brutality and macho egos that cause destruction and suffering.

Brothers and Sisters, you are also Ambassadors of Sudan to every country in which you happen to be residing. I am appealing to you to open a new page of intimate relationships among ourselves. This should be across regions, race and religions. When we begin doing such appreciations, then we will be healing from decades of abuse, neglect and bigotry. We all need to repent from all the bad things we have done to our nation.

As your Ambassador, I am the go-to guy to resolve, if not ease, some of the problems we encounter when we are in a foreign country. Your consular needs and other services that you might need will be rendered with vigilance and sense of pride in what we are required to offer to our people.

Ladies and Gentlemen: The United States of America where we currently reside is a great country. It is one of the most advanced countries in virtually all sorts of developments and high technology the world has ever seen. I urge you to make the best of it while here. Get your education and also those of your children. Look at the big picture and strive for an honorable goal. It will be a great achievement if you can take something home when you return. Our country needs technical skills so that we can develop our motherland. America is great because of education, education and education. We can reduce the harshness of nature through education and a skilled labor force. Please seize such opportunities while you are in these United States of America.

Lastly, I want you to think big and be optimistic like I am. I want us to be well organized so that we can make wonders to the name of our country. By being organized, we will have a pool of great minds that will plan our course of action over the coming years. Please get together with your fellow citizens of Sudan in your state or city and put a structure that can combine your energies for a good cause of our citizens. I anticipate a grass root organization that will make our communication easy and access to our embassy services satisfactory.

I salute you all and wish you and your loved ones Happy Holidays. May Almighty give you peace and happiness. General/Professor John Ukec Lueth Ukec
Sudan Ambassador to the United States of America
