Are there any medical students or midwives that are members of this forum? If so, would you answer the following?

I am a obstetrics nursing student and my assignment is to give a cultural presentation on the country of Sudan. I have done much research on various websites and I have had trouble finding answers to the following questions. It is my hope that someone might be able to answer my questions.
1. What is the typical family structure? What is the role of men, women, children and extended family?
2. What is the cultural views of pregnancy?
3. Is there a special diet for the pregnant woman during pregnancy or after pregnancy? If so, what does the diet consist of?
4. What are the newborn feeding practices? Do most mothers breastfeed their children or bottlefeed?
5. What are the views related to childbirth? Are men allowed to be with their wives during childbirth? Where does the birth take place? What kind of care is given during the birthing process (medicine, treatment etc.)
6. What are the views for postpartum care? Does the woman go back to normal household duties after the baby? Does her family, friends help her during the postpartum period?
7. What are the views for the newborn? Are there any special ritual ceremonies? If so what do they mean? If the baby is a boy, do they practice circumsion? If so, when do they perform it?

I would like to know the difference between someone who is interested in cultural exchange and someone who is fishing for "special" kind of information. The word SPY comes to mind

you want to know if "there are some special rituals" about the newborn? i don't want to sound unfriendly, but I tell you what ... we Sudanese have changed. We don't give information for free ANYMORE

do you see us sudanese people sniffing around your country for information? why don't you give us a break?

what you need is a ....

now that was stupid... someone somewhere is asking questions about culture, which will lead to broader and better understanding of Sudan and its people and needs, and you act like this? you should be ashamed, assuming you have the depth of character to be so.

this question need not be limited to male babies unfortunately

nursing student, these are good questions - don't be put off by one dumb answer...

and there are many many medical practitioners that frequent this sight that can (and i am sure will) answer these questions.

as a nursing student, have you ever heard of the "Mongolian mark" for babies? we care for a native American Indian child, and she was born with such, and we have come to learn most Asiatic children (including native American Indians) have this.

these are nice questions, and i look forward to hearing the answers:clap:

if you have read the post carefully, you would have realized that the question was designed to be about male babies. the aim of the person who posed it is to get a different answer. i have seen through it, and i hope now you see it!

you assume automatically that these characters are interested in sudan just "for the heck of it". i don't think that assumption is either safe ,or sound.

is there some tactical secret that would be divulged if you were to tell someone that a woman takes six weeks off to be with her baby after birth while extended family help, or that mothers breast feed babies for x months, or that there are celebrations or ceremonies celebrating children, or that mothers take prenatal vitamins and drink coconut juice and rub palm oil on their tummies????

the leading question is the last one, number 7. the questions before that were ok.

if you have been just " a lil bit" patient, you will realise this.

by the way, don't you think it should be "nursing" student" who should do the explaining here?

hold your peace, sir, and me too. let the person who has asked the question respond and argue the case!

2. What is the cultural views of pregnancy?
what do you mean??

3. Is there a special diet for the pregnant woman during pregnancy or after pregnancy? If so, what does the diet consist of?
not that I am aware of, but I know after the birth the ladies get feed in very special diet (very traditional ) to help them produce lots of milk

4. What are the newborn feeding practices? Do most mothers breastfeed their children or bottlefeed?
yeah most new mothers breastfeed their new borns

5. What are the views related to childbirth? Are men allowed to be with their wives during childbirth? Where does the birth take place? What kind of care is given during the birthing process (medicine, treatment etc.)
Birth take place in hospital in most cases, it is really hard to say about rural areas.... I think still fathers aren't allowed in with their wives

6. What are the views for postpartum care? Does the woman go back to normal household duties after the baby? Does her family, friends help her during the postpartum period?
No, in the old days a wife is excused from normal house duties for 40 days....many still practice that....and the family takes up all the work...including care for her and the new baby

7. What are the views for the newborn? Are there any special ritual ceremonies? If so what do they mean? If the baby is a boy, do they practice circumsion? If so, when do they perform it?
yes baby boys get circumzied but when depends on the family. so do it right after birth some wait a few years....

hi nuringstudent, I don't know the answer to most of your questions but I did my best to answer you:D it is in red next to the questions...

a friend,

can we just let this guy (whoever he is) respond? instead of getting so worked up answering his questions?

so one foreigner is enough to get 3 sudanese explain to him so eloquently the ins and outs of our life?

let him come forward and argue his case. so, please show some restraint at least until he has replied!
